Performance conversations – bringing it home strong.

Gallup’s Workplace Report

We kicked off our performance conversation season by looking at the alarming headline from the Gallup’s State of the Workplace Report which asked: is employee engagement at the brink of collapse?

A deep dive into the report identified that: Global engagement had fallen and is costing the world economy US $438 billion in lost productivity.

The primary cause being a drop in manager engagement, falling from 30% down to 27%.

Overall, the percentage of engaged employees fell from 23% to 21%, as you can see in the graph, which is the biggest drop we’ve had since before COVID.

The Perfect Storm

We must coach in line with the organisation’s process and procedures. But coaching around under performance really does work.  It works because we are focused on what we want to see; we can discuss the reality of the situation; and then talk about the goals and options to more forward. Experienced coaches will hear the GROW Model here.

Coaching tools that make a difference

In response, throughout the series we offer several coaching tools which we know can make a difference. This includes taking a strength-based approach to performance conversations and the same time, dealing with trickier conversations.

Coaching mindset

Using a coaching approach and adopting a coaching mindset means that we can focus on what the expectations are, where we are currently. Furthermore, how we raise, shift, lift, or change performance to get to where we need to be. Importantly, these tools are not just applicable for the annual performance conversation season, but for all conversations we’re having in the workplace. In addition, we can use the tools for our own performance when we want to achieve goals.

The bottom line

The bottom line is coaching works. And the more we focus on coaching employees, the more likely we are to firstly address only the engagement crisis we have in our workplaces.

The research suggests we can turn around these statistics. When employers provide manager training, it improves manager thriving from 28% to 34%. Furthermore, if they have training and someone in at working actively encourages their development, management thriving increases by 50%.
