Ex Director of Astrophysics NASA & Synergy Global’s Team Leader – 4-D Systems
It’s very hard to capture such an amazing CV in just a few lines, but here are some headlines. In his 20’s Charlie was an Engineer, Inventor, and Research Astrophysicist, earning an BSc Physics, MS & PhD in Astrophysics, along with, many prestigious awards from NASA & other organisations – by the time he was 30 he was a well-published author & became interested in leadership (studying at Harvard Business School). By 38yrs, he’d become NASA’s Director of Astrophysics…towards his 40’s he led NASA’s astrophysics program launching 12 satellites with a budget of $750m/yr – one of the largest scientific programs in history. He continued to pick up Outstanding Leadership awards from NASA & the American Astronautical Society. In 1990, the world discovered that NASA’s crown jewel, the Hubble Space Telescope was useless because of a flawed mirror. Charlie mounted the daring space repair mission that fixed the telescope (Hubble is now in its 15th year).
NASA awarded him a second Outstanding Leadership Medal, an honour bestowed on less than 50 people (including astronauts) in NASA’s History. He was then promoted to the highest (non-political) level in Government. As Associate Deputy Administrator, he developed NASA’s post-cold-war strategy. NASA then awarded him its highest honour, the Distinguished Service Medal, given “when the contribution is so extraordinary that other forms of recognition would be inadequate.”
In his 50’s & 60’s, Charlie became a Professor of Leadership at the University of Colorado’s Business School, a Business Owner & Author. He was curious about leadership’s role in Hubble’s mishap. He taught undergraduates, MBAs, & Execs ‘Twenty-first Century Leadership’.
He later founded 4-D Systems with Ernest & Young as his first client. He began by converting his class material into a business-oriented 3-day workshop. Later, he added ICF Credentialed Coaching to minimise “post-workshop decay.” Next, seeing that intellectual immersion is insufficient to cause behavioural change (the only thing that matters) he added fast on-line behavioural assessments. Finally, realising that context was the driver behind team & individual performance, he invented a 1hr “Context-Shifting Worksheet” (CSW). Today, 4-D Systems has sales above $4m/yr. His team won the ICF 2007 Prism Award for “enhanced excellence & business achievement…with documented return on investment.” He now supports a team of well credentialed & experienced 4-D trained Consultants for a global roll-out.
