‘That resume was clearly written by AI’, said one of our clients recently. ‘The issue is that when the candidate interviewed, they were terrible. That’s where good coaching questions come into it’.
It was this quote that prompted the Coaching Café for this week. Specifically, we explore the intersect between AI, HR and quality coaching questions.
Paula Jones-Hunt our Resident HR Specialist hosts this Coaching Café discussion. With over 25 years of HR experience, Paula has seen many changes in the industry. Therefore, we are keen to hear her insights.

Not experts, explorers
Paula confirms that we are not experts. We are explorers. And exploring the use of AI in the HR industry is not new. AI has been used in HR for many years including in tasks such as job application tracking and candidate resume screening. In addition, employee engagement and psychometric profiling analysis and the list goes on. What is new is the proliferation into such areas as performance reviews. In addition, virtual reality training, payroll analysis and predictive analysis, to name a few.
How prevalent in the use of AI in HR?
According to IDC’s Future of Work research: 80% of global 2000 companies will use algorithmic managers for hiring, firing, and training workers by 2024.
The Future of Work survey by Eightfold AI found that the top 5 functions where HR departments are currently using AI technology are:
- Employee records management (78%)
- Payroll processing and benefits administration (77%)
- Recruitment and hiring (73%)
- Performance management (72%)
- Onboarding (69%).
Where is the greatest benefit for HR?
The greatest benefit is the ability of AI to remove repetitive, operational work. In particular, the allows HR practitioners to shift priorities. Particularly to providing the business with more strategic value.
Where does AI, Coaching and HR intersect?
There are a number of areas that AI, Coaching and HR come together. These include:
1. Scenarios:
Describing a scenario, for example a performance conversation and then using AI to draft a conversation. The difference between using a search engine for this purpose, and AI, is that AI can develop the conversation further. Importantly through the instructions given.
2. Developing question banks:
You can use AI to easily generate a range of questions that is fit for purpose. For example, if you are doing team coaching. Because you can use AI to develop a range of questions that the team can then improve upon and implement.
3. Role plays:
This could be with the use of virtual reality or simply interacting with Chat Bots.
The key, as we mentioned is to explore. Explore the benefits of using AI. And where it can improve processes. In addition, make our coaching and interactions even better.
Enjoy exploring.
