What happens when two coaches, who have both been coaching for over 15 years, try to do bad coaching? The result is a hilarious and cringe-worthy attempt at coaching. We are offering this just for a laugh. At the same time, offering a coaching demonstration as a great learning opportunity.

The ‘bad coaching’ challenge
This was the challenge presented to Open Door’s CEO Natalie Ashdown and our Learning and Development Manager Brigitte Calvert. Both Natalie and Brigitte have been coaching for over 15 years. Furthermore Brigitte, in particular listens to coaching recordings every day as part of the assessment for our Certificate IV in Workplace and Business Coaching. However, the task was to demonstrate what it sounds like when people are not doing coaching, or ‘bad coaching.
Why is this important?
It is important to listen to good coaching. In addition, we can learn a lot from what bad coaching sounds like. The problem is, for those of us who are coaching managers to coach their teams. You will notice that the managers are likely to be doing all these behaviours, without even knowing it. So we are drawing attention to the behaviours that need to change.
Characteristics of bad coaching
When you listen to webinar see if you can pick up the following:
- jumping into the space
- in addition, interrupting the coachee and cutting them off
- picking the topic for the coachee
- not only that, but also making suggestions
- and the coach making the conversation about themself.
In summary, enjoy this light-hearted attempt at coaching. We hope you can laugh with us. Furthermore, focus on making sure we are doing good coaching and coaching our managers to do the same.
