Recently, during a workshop, a manager said what many others are thinking: “It’s not all rainbows and lollipops. What if they are under performing? What do you do then?”
The frustration was real, and it is common. This was a manager doing their best to support an employee but unsure what else to try. Managers need more strategies. They want to understand how coaching might help.
How coaching works for under performance:
We must coach in line with the organisation’s process and procedures. But coaching around under performance really does work. It works because we are focused on what we want to see; we can discuss the reality of the situation; and then talk about the goals and options to more forward. Reframe the conversation:
Coaching is about reframing the performance conversation. In particular as an opportunity to shift, lift, raise, change the performance. Especially an opportunity for dialogue. See the diagram.
