Taking a coaching approach to performance reviews

This week we continue our conversation around getting ready for annual performance reviews.  Many organisations are entering into the annual performance review season.  That means trying to schedule in appointments with the team. Furthermore, meeting the demands from HR Managers to submit reviews by deadlines.  In addition, assisting managers to have good quality conversations.  This is where coaching really comes in handy

Asking the Open Door experts

At Open Door we want you to get on the front foot with performance review conversations. Therefore, we asked Brigitte Calvert, Open Door’s Learning and Development Manager and our Resident HR Specialist, Paula-Jones Hunt for their insights.  You can listen to the recording as they share with us how a coaching approach really works for the annual performance conversation.

Coaching questions for performance review conversations

Open Door’s framework for performance reviews features a series of questions that are designed to encourage a positive conversation.  Furthermore, reflection and engagement on the part of both the manager and the team member.  The coaching questions are featured in our Certificate IV in Workplace and Business Coaching qualification.  They include:

  • What are you most proud of?
  • Where have you experience challenges?
  • What are you focussed on for continuous improvement?
  • What is the plan for moving forward?

Take the time to reflect and prepare

One of the most important things we can do is to take the time to reflect and prepare. Whether you are involved in developing annual performance systems or coaching managers. Or a manager embarking on the annual performance review season. Maybe you are getting yourself ready for your own performance review? Importantly, you can use this webinar to kick start your preparation.

Enjoy your coaching.
