Last week we kicked off the Coaching Café with Trends in Coaching. We are sharing the important topics that we are likely to influence our workplaces and coaching this year.
Alumni on the line agree that one of the key topics is the prevalence of mental health concerns. In addition, burnout in the workplace. And the focus on the legislative response that enshrines the ‘right to disconnect’.
Importantly, we agree that coaching plays a significant role in addressing these issues and the underlying causes. Therefore over two weeks we explore this topic.

What is the right to disconnect?
Fair Work Amendment (Right to Disconnect) Bill 2023 amends the Fair Work Act 2009. In doing so it:
prevents employers from contacting employees outside of work hours. And provides that employees are not required to monitor, read or respond to work communications from their employer outside of work hours.
We also have to watch out for availability creep.
What is availability creep?
‘Availability creep’ is a term which describes the increasing encroachment on personal and out of work hours. It is the pressure felt by employees to be constantly available to perform their work duties. This is facilitated, in large part, by developments which are meant to be positive and to increase flexibility and efficiency, such as the technology we use to work remotely (i.e. work phones and company laptops).
What is happening?
In our discussions with clients, availability creep is real. So is the feeling that they can’t disconnect. In particular, senior people will simply say ‘it’s expected of me’ at my level. And they are correct. Even with international meetings that happen late at night because of time zones. Executives will not start later in the afternoon and take the morning off. Instead they will work all day…and then all night. But just because it is expected, does not make it right…or sustainable. And that’s why we think we have an issue with burnout. Just take a look at the statistics below from Deloitte. And of course, things are getting worse.

Fresh from her week away, Natalie says ‘we all need a call to action’. It’s all very well talking about burnout. In addition, the right to disconnect. And mental health in the workplace. But we must start taking real steps. And start building new commitments towards a more sustainable approach to work. Furthermore, as coaches we have a real opportunity to influence in this regard.
With this is mind: what will you do today to build more sustainability? And walk your talk on this topic?
